Master Pork Producer Award given to Plymouth County producer
January 25, 2018

(CLIVE, Iowa) - The Iowa Pork Producers Association has recognized a Plymouth County pork producer as a member of the newest class of Master Pork Producers.

Stephen Schroeder of Remsen officially joined the last tonight as IPPA presented him with the coveted brass belt buckle, emblematic of the award, at the Iowa Pork Congress Banquet in Des Moines. The honor included a brief multi-media presentation of the Schroeder pork operation.

The 4th generation pork producer finishes pigs and has been involved in pig farming since he was a young boy. In 1996, Steve, his father and brother bought into a sow unit in nearby Germantown. They sold all of their sows and converted farrowing barns into nurseries. In the early 2000s, Schroeder expanded his operation by adding two hoop buildings and a 2,400-head finishing barn that he uses for custom feeding. In the last two years, two 1,200-head buildings were constructed as well as a new nursery. Pigs are sold through Premier Pork with a majority going to Smithfield Foods in Denison.

Schroeder also grows soybean seed for Pioneer, as well as corn. He finds great satisfaction in grinding every kernel of corn he grows to feed his pigs. In the fall, all the manure from his buildings is pumped and injected into his own farm land. Steve takes pride in effectively utilizing the manure by applying it with nitrogen inhibitors.

Steve donates time and talents to the church and is a long-time member of the Plymouth County Pork Producers, serving as a board member for more than 20 years and as president.

Schroeder and his wife, Michelle, have five adult children.

Nominated by their neighbors and peers, Master Pork Producers are recognized for their innovation, attention to quality, efficiency and production records within their farm enterprise. They are considered industry leaders who are committed to producing the highest quality pork products. Their operations are environmentally sound, they care about the livestock, are good neighbors and active in their community.

IPPA and Iowa State University have carefully selected Master Pork Producers every year since 1942.
