(CLIVE, Iowa) - Jeff and Nancy Lucas farm and raise pigs near New Vienna and their efforts were noticed by the Iowa Pork Producers Association.
The couple earned the title of 2017 Master Pork Producers and received the coveted brass belt buckle, emblematic of the award, at the Iowa Pork Congress Banquet last night in Des Moines. The honor included a brief multi-media presentation of the couple's hog farm.
The Lucases market about 9,000 pigs a year from their diversified wean-to-finish swine farm. Jeff manages the day-to-day pig care responsibilities, while Nancy oversees the bookkeeping for their farm as well as a Pipestone-managed sow farm that they hold shares in. They handle the marketing and loading of the pigs themselves.
The farm couple grinds and mixes feed from grain raised on the Lucas farm. They utilize the swine manure to fertilize their cropland.
Jeff and Nancy credit much of their success to surrounding themselves with good people and working alongside each other as teammates. They invest a lot of time in getting pigs off to a good start. They believe it pays back with good health and better performance in the finishing stage.
The Lucases both grew up on farms. After high school, Jeff completed a two-year swine program at Kirkwood Community College. He is a past president of the Dubuque County Pork Producers and served from 1984 to 1989. Nancy has volunteered with the pork producers and is a past recipient of the Belle Ringer Award. They are both active church members and Jeff now serves as a member of the Alliance Mutual Insurance Board.
The couple has two adult children.
Nominated by their neighbors and peers, Master Pork Producers are recognized for their innovation, attention to quality, efficiency and production records within their farm enterprise. They are considered industry leaders who are committed to producing the highest quality pork products. Their operations are environmentally sound, they care about the livestock, are good neighbors and active in their community.
IPPA and Iowa State University have carefully selected Master Pork Producers every year since 1942.
