Cherokee County couple receive Master Pork Producer Award
January 25, 2018

(CLIVE, Iowa) - Tyler and Jessica Kannegieter of Aurelia are now Master Pork Producers. The Iowa Pork Producers Association bestowed the honor on the couple last night.

IPPA presented the couple with the coveted brass belt buckle, emblematic of the award, at the Iowa Pork Congress Banquet in Des Moines. The honor included a brief multi-media presentation of the Kannegieter's pork enterprise.

Tyler is a regional production manager for Hanor in northwest Iowa and Jessica managed a 4,800-head nursery for several years until recently opening a coffee business in Aurelia and Cherokee.

Both Tyler and Jessica have been involved in pork production for most of their lives. Jessica spent a lot of time raising pigs on her family's farm and Tyler gained experience working for Sleezer's boar stud in high school. After college, he worked as a contract laborer until he took a service tech position with Hanor. He took his current position two years ago.

Tyler is involved in nursery-to-finish production for Hanor. He manages about 400,000 pig spaces and eight service technicians. Over the past couple years, Tyler has helped convert production from wean-to-finish to nursery-to-finish flows to help get pigs started better and ensure health throughout the finishing stage. Going forward, the Kannegieter's would like to continue their involvement with Hanor by building a finishing barn of their own.

The Kannegieter's stay very busy in their community. Jessica is part of the Cherokee County Extension Council, a volunteer coach and runs the concession stands for the Aurelia Little League.  Both are members of the Cherokee County Pork Producers and Tyler has worked at the Iowa Pork Tent at the Iowa State Fair for the past five years.

Tyler and Jessica have four children who are involved in 4-H and exhibit cattle at their county fair and local open shows.

Nominated by their neighbors and peers, Master Pork Producers are recognized for their innovation, attention to quality, efficiency and production records within their farm enterprise. They are considered industry leaders who are committed to producing the highest quality pork products. Their operations are environmentally sound, they care about the livestock, are good neighbors and active in their community.

IPPA and Iowa State University have carefully selected Master Pork Producers every year since 1942.
