overview of the U.S. Swine Industry. He will discuss the economics
of breakeven in the industry and will take a look at 2007 and
issues that the industry will face. The goal of this session

Risk Assessment of Disease
in Swine Production -- Potential Application to PCVAD

This seminar will cover the general
application of risk assessment to swine production. A well-developed
example of risk assessment for PRRSv in the breeding herd will
be described as well as how the same approach might be applied
to PCVAD.
Swine Production Experiences
with PCVAD

Dr. Hans Rotto,
DVM, swine production veterinarian, Ames, Iowa

A significant increase in incidence
and severity of porcine circovirus associated disease (PCVAD)
has occurred in Iowa, many cases involving finishing swine. Dr.
Rotto will describe the clinical diagnosis of this disease as
well as management and treatment strategies in the field.
Canadian Experiences with
PCVAD

Dr. George Charbonneau,
DVM, Swine Services Group, Ontario, Canada

Dr. Charbonneau will describe
the clinical presentation and diagnosis of PCVAD in Ontario,
Canada. Interventions that have been used in the treatment, control
and prevention of the disease will be presented. He also will
discuss experiences using PCV type 2 vaccines to control PCVAD.

PQA Plus® and its Introduction

Dr. Paul Sundberg,

The goal of this session is to
explain how PQA Plus® will be introduced to the industry
and the transition from PQA III to the new program. Dr. Sundberg
also will discuss why the new program is being developed and
how it addresses the issue of animal well-being.
Implications with Animal
Handling and Transport

Dr. John McGlone,
professor, Animal and Food Sciences, Texas Tech University

This session will focus on the
impacts of animal movement and handling. Practical suggestions
will be given to producers on how to most effectively deal with
handling stress. Dr. McGlone also will discuss research on methods
to reduce dead and down pigs during transport, suggestions for
pig workers loading and unloading trucks, and space requirements
during transportation.
The Iowa Nutrient Planner

The goal of this session is to
discuss the Iowa Nutrient Planner, software to assist producers
in nutrient management. What can this software do? How can I
get the software? What nutrient planning purposes can this be
used for, i.e., DNR, NRCS, CNMPs? Steve will address these specific
questions in this session.
Evaluation of the accuracy
of farm reported data used to make health decisions for the breeding
herd and grow-finish production

The seminar will utilize data
from both grow-finish females and breeding-herd females that
are typically used to make health and production decisions, including
culling. All too frequently, decisions to modify a sow system
or a grow-finish population are based on field-collected data
and can lead to incorrect management decisions.
Iowa Environmental Regulations
Update

Protecting the environment is
the goal of all pork producers. To help achieve that goal, Eldon
will cover regulations and recommended practices from manure
management plans to construction and expansion. Particular attention
will be given to new DNR rules, including "director discretion"
and the phosphorus index for MMP annual updates. To better help
producers achieve compliance, Eldon will highlight "gray
areas" in the regulations and DNR interpretations.

Eldon will discuss manure easements,
swine care and feeding contracts, and SEW and feeder pig purchase
contracts from the perspective of both contracting parties as
well as hog marketing contracts. Fundamental steps to follow
before entering into a contract, including contract review and
negotiation, will be covered; in addition to contract terms most
likely to cause disputes and how to try to avoid legal action.
Related topics such as insurance on pigs fed under contract and
UCC liens also will be discussed.

we might end up after all incentives to expand ethanol production
have been exhausted.

of Feeding DDGS to Pigs

professor, Swine Nutrition and Management, University of Minnesota

An industry expert in the arena
of feeding DDGS to swine, Dr. Shurson will present an overview
of current research results and understanding of how DDGS can
be used effectively in swine diets. The impact of feeding diets,
including DDGS, on growth performance and carcass and pork quality
also will be discussed.
Marketing Standards for DDGS

The goal of this session is to
have a marketer from an ethanol plant share his experiences with
marketing of DDGS specifically to swine producers. Ryan will
outline from an ethanol plant perspective the opportunities for
use of DDGS in swine rations.
Effects of corn co-products
on gaseous emissions from swine

professor and director of environmental stewardship, Michigan
State University

Dr. Powers will review the recent
research that quantified ammonia and hydrogen sulfide emissions
over the grow-finish phases from swine fed corn co-products compared
to corn diets.
